Maces and Hammers and Flails oh my!
« on: Oct 05, 01, 03:48:01 pm CDT »

Hola Y'all,

I've been pondering something for the last few years on and off.  It came
on again after I purchased this sweet warhammer from MDRF this past
weekend.  I now have the collection of bludgeoning weapons that I always
wanted as a wee lad *chuckeles*  Club, Flanged Mace, Flail, Staff and the
Warhammer :D

Now, here's the thing...there are different fighting styles for swords
(depending on the type of blade you use and stuff), and I understand that
there is an Axe fighting style, but i've never heard of any type of style
or school of fighting for the afore mentioned weapons of bashing (save for
the staff).  Anyone know if any even exist or do you just step up to the
plate so to speak and hit a homer?  I always wondered on this and now would
like to actually attempt to gain some knowledge on the topic.  I haven't
done any research on this yet, I figured i'd come here and pick y'alls brains first.  Any responses would be appreciated.

Ah, bludgeoning weapons...my favorites!  I admit, my technique (if you can call it that) is just to beat the object of my ire as hard as possible...

So when you DO find out real techniques and stuff, MacRican dear, will you show me?  Hmm?  I promise, I'm a good student...I'm real...er...studious! ;)

I don't know if this will help, but you may want to check with some Filipino Martial Arts instructors such as Kali/Arnis. The club and the mace should be good substitutes for the Escrima Sticks. As for the flail, you may try someone that teaches Nunchaku. They were developed from similar agricultural tools, though they were designed differently (two different parts of the world).

If you want something more European, you may try The Historical Armed Combat Associtaion. The last time I checked they had people in ya'lls neck of the woods that may be able to help you.

Magnus:  Ya know, the Escrima sticks and Nunchuks (sp?) did come to mind at a couple of points.  The 'chucks I have some (very limited) experience in from way back in the days when I took karate, the sticks I've no clue though.  I'll have to hit the Martial Arts store and pick up a tape *grins*  thanks for the info though, I've got HACA bookmarked in one of my accounts, I'll have to dig it up.  I honestly forgot about that site 'till you brought it up thanks again :)

Danae dear, When next we meet up in person, I shall show you what little I know as long as you bring the staff you've been telling me about and -never- showing me :P  (as a side note, I do have a video on using the staff dear, I'll have to break it out again before Sterling hehe).

Hey, HEY, I BROUGHT it last time I went to Tux but YOU were not there.  But I don't think it'll be making any more trips to faire unless I color it.

Instead, I have a pair of ironwood staffs that I may start using as a replacement...or one of several smaller "I dunno what kinda wood" ones.

Sterling will be jolly good fun!  Imagine!  *sigh*

Carlos-
there is an kung-fu weapons set that uses the double "mellon" hammers- kind of like over sized maces- there was one guy in Crouching Tiger that had them(tavern scene)

ya know, I remember that scene Calen and one of the catalogs I get sells a similar looking pair, but no video on usage.  Perhaps brute strength, good timing and and a decent swing is all you need for the bludgeoning weapons *chuckles*  ah well, the search continues.

Though if anyone is interested I did find a training manual of sorts at www.aemma.org.  It's the art of Longsword Combat book one.  I haven't read through it yet ( i recently lost the hard copy i had) but from what I've perused it looks interesting.

Now I can say thanks to you MacRican. The link that you gave was a good one. It kinda killed two birds with one stone for me. Thanks again.

Glad to be of service :)  erm, just so you know...if you decide to pring it and don't have a great printer (I have a Lexmark Z11)  Just give yourself lots of time.  Took me just over six hours to print it.  But i must say that during those six hours, it enabled me to peruse E-Bay a bit and found a link to a site where they sell Klingon weapons, so it wasn't a complete bout of boredom LOL.

I downloaded the book on pdf. I think that if I want to have a hard copy, I will pay the money and have one sent to me. 6 hours to print is a pretty long time (not to mention a lot of paper) to print something.

Is there a lot of stuff in color? I mean, would I really need to use color?
