Riddle me this . . .
« on: Mar 02, 05, 03:12:55 pm CST »

Greetings,

I've been lurking on the boards now for quite some time, waiting for an adequate gift to offer to you all.

I found this while rummaging through some old books and thought you'd might enjoy:

Swings by his thigh most magical!
Below the belt, beneath the folds
of his clothes it hangs, a hole in its front end,
stiff-set and stout, but swivels about.

Leveling the head of this hanging instrument,
its wielder hoists his hem above the knee:
it is his will to fill a well-known hole
that it fits fully when at full length.

He has often filled it before. Now he fills it again.

IMHO, it's a possible interpretation, but according to my source – nope, not a flagon. :)

well, let's see....

stiff-set and stout, but swivels about.

if yours swivels about, methinks you might want to consult a healthcare professional....

Maybe you can't understand this having a wee one and all but mine swings about. And swivel could be just another way of saying swing.

Basically it's clear it's about a Scotsman and his unit gettin' some. Gettin' some from a fairly promiscuos lass at that...based on...

it is his will to fill a well-known hole.

I think it's pretty clear. :P

Let's just say that it's not a dick . . . but the author wanted you to think it was - that whole double entendre thing.

Tho that was the first thing I thought of when I first read this riddle.

That's a good part to listen to. It is a key (and a lock).

It's a riddle from the Exeter Book, a collection of Anglo-Saxon poems, riddles, gnomic verses and such. I liked it because it's a reminder that the "sexual revolution" of the '60's wasn't so much as forward motion as it was returning to our roots. :)

The Exeter book is actually a collection of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, and there is a copy in the original Old English lurking about, but it's a hard find and OE is as much like English as German is IMO.

However, if you look for the following, you should do okay:

Alexander, Michael (trans), The Earliest English Poems, London, Penguin 1991 (ISBN0140445943)
Crossley-Holland, Kevin (trans), The Exeter Riddle Book, London, Penguin 1993 (ISBN0140433678)
Raffel, Burton (trans) Poems From the Old English, Lincoln, U Nebraska P: 1964 (ISBN 0803251548) (Dr. Raffel was my professor's professor - I guess that makes him my "grand professor," though it also dates me considerably).
