Is that how they get the clothes clean? Just send them back in time to before they were dirty?

Yep, Yep,, but the actual stress of the time folding not only folds the clothes a great many times (hence the wrinkles) it also stresses the material to the breaking point and thus the frays and tears.  Socks in particular are difficult due to their being a single surface shape and sometimes are either completely destroyed or sent so far back that they break down into their basic elements and leave with the washwater.

makes sense, you have to put the soap in as a dampening device for the time vortex to hold everything together and the water around it is just to air-seal the machine so nothing extra gets sucked in to the machine thus sending it back in time.  but how do the dryers work?
and why do some clothes need to go to the dry cleaners?  can they not withstand the low pressure time travel on the home units and need to go to a more powerful system?

Exactly, contrary to popular belief its not the delicacy of the material that causes the need for drycleaning but the very molecular robustness of the material that requires the addition of chemicals to free up the bonding.

Dryers?  they just use heat the take water out of cloth...  what'd ya think?
