Are the Guilds Dead
« on: Oct 15, 07, 12:50:05 pm CDT »

Ok so It seems like the guilds have become an endangered species. Less and less of the players are about, the boards are quiet and no new blood is being brought in.

So I pose this question. Has our time come? Are the Guilds Dead?

That the boards are quiet doesn't mean much. A lot of the boards I'm on are quiet right now. When Lars starts selling Memberships again, I've got two friends lined up to receive 'em. So, I don't see as the guild's dead.

See i guess I worded it wrong. It has nothing to do with the boards as much as it has to do with the guilds at the fairs. I know in NYRF there has been a dramatic drop in the boyos showin up (I'm at fault here as well) the older guys have pretty much walked and let the pups loose to play... not that there is anything wrong with it its just that we loose so many of the traditions that have been set forth.

i guess I'm just starting to look back on the Good/Bad old days

The Wenches and Rogues seem to be goin' strong up at CTRF. I participated in a serial roguing and then walked escort with the wenches on their walk. I was told this goes on every day there. I have heard that other faires have good guild activity as well.

I would guess that NYRF has become to big of a free-for-all lately. The faire has grown huge and everyone has their own fave hangouts now. It's not like it used to be there, where you really only had a couple of places to hang. So many choices now, so many places to play. Some days the bud wenches are runnin' ragged with rose tags and such.

I know that NYRF/FoF has at least 18 people that want to join the Privateers.

I was talkin' to Lars the other night at Forest of Fear and he says he has a bunch of back orders he has to take care of first, before he starts takin' new orders. He was also talkin' about trying to get his shop open again too, but he is really busy with NYRF. I think he is lookin' at mid-November to start takin' new orders, but that is dependant on NYRF's corprate cronies. There may be some new building going on soon.

Duh.  It's always been.  ;)  Basically each generation polices itself to some degree and looks at the previous for guidance to some degree.  Sadly most of us are now a generation or two off from the current or, at least, it feels that way.

I think it is a combination of things

1) You guys are getting a lot older. ;-)
2) life changes... some guys getting married, haveing kids, changing jobs.
C- Lets face it it is a BIG commitment being at faire (almost) every weekend.
 4] Disposable income

I work at a hunted hayride every weekend in October which is hard enough and I can not imagine committing most every weekend at the end of summer to faire.
My wife and I had our first date at Tux and we would go a couple three times a year till life started to get in the way.
So I would not say that they are dead but on life support. I think the guilds need a place like this (the boards) to pump some life in to the guilds. Some of the the older members (not in age but years of membership) used to post here with stories, banter and bust balls it drove a lot of people to the guild. My 2 cents

My piraticalwench wife and I have Queen's passes to NYRF and have had them for many seasons. I am there both days, she usually only on Saturday, as she has church on Sunday, but Ren Faire is my church. heheheh.

We have been in attendance since 1976, but for the first few years it wasn't every season as I used to work in the music biz and was usually away on tour. The last 21 years though, we have attended every season. I am as old as most of you(age wise. Membership wise, my # is in the 800s so I would be a relative newcomer compared to you bronzeagers), older than some, younger than some, so age, getting married, having kids(mine was a faire slave for a couple of seasons) can always be worked around. Money is another story, but hey, it usually is. heheheh.

I was at closing weekend of MDRF and when I walked in, I saw 5 Rogue's Guild pins, right away. That was just walking in the gate. I saw more pinned rogues at that faire, than I have seen at any one faire in quite a while and that includes CTRF, which has a pretty active guild life. I met more new guild brothers than I have in a while. Ran into some old friends as well, but missed Gardo. How the hell did I do that??? Hmmmm. I must have seen him, but just didn't recognize him, since I don't think we have ever really formally met.

So, to make a long post endless, I think the Guilds are alive and well, but just in need of a little guidance.

Posting here as mentioned by you older guys would help I think and getting the renspace group moving along would help too. I think we have a total of 8 members and so far I have the only post on a fairly pristine forum.

Of course, all of this rambling is just that, rambling and purely my opinion and not meant to be taken any other way than that. Hey, I'm an old pirate and a little crazy from the salt and sun. heheheh
