Scotch...
« on: Mar 12, 08, 01:16:47 pm CDT »

Ok...after being primarily a beer drinker over the years, I've recently developed both a taste for and an interest in Scotch. I know there are several professional Scotch drinkers here so I thought I'd ask for some advice.

I'm currently on my 5th bottle and would like to not purchase the same bottle twice until I've had some experience with more brands. So far I have had:

Dewars White Label
Johnny Walker Red Label
Johnny Walker Black Label
Glennfiddich 15 Year
Glenlivet 12 Year

Any recommendations? So far my favorite is the Glenlivet. Also...after the 3 types of blended...I'd rather stick to single malt. I know it's more expensive but this is a new hobby I'm enjoying and don't mind spending a little extra for it. Still...if someone recommends a blended...I'll try it.

Any tips would be appreciated. Cheers.

No real suggestions, however, I just wanted to say welcome to the ranks of scotch lovers   ;)

Oban is a single malt that I enjoyed a lot but it's price has gone up a lot. I think it is in the $70 range now.

I've seen that one. I can do $70 once...just to try it. But it'll be tough if that turns out to be a fave.

I'm thinking of trying The Macallan next. It's Neil Peart's favorite.

I stopped at the liquor store. They had Oban in the locked cabinet. It was $74.99.

I'll get it another time but decided to instead grab both a bottle of The Macallan 12 year and The Balvenie Doublewood 12 year.

Gradually build up a small selection to choose from.

I was doing exactly that. I drank the Dewars, the JW Black label, the Glenfiddich, and then cracked open the Glenlivet.

Then my boss gave me a bottle of JW Red label he said he had but would never drink. I liked the Glenlivet a lot so I decided to take my time with that and jump to the Red label.

Unfortunately...I think the Red label sucks so that made me want to jump to something else.

I tried the Macallan last night. Not bad.

I still prefer the Glenlivet so far, though.

Penderyn (A lovely Welsh Whisky)
but is you want Whiskey...
Isle of Jura
Isle of Jura Superstition
18 YO Glenfiddich

(BTW - the Welsh distillers are the ones that came to the US and started Bourbon - you know that little 'ol Daniels clan...)

18 YO Glenfiddich

When I was talking to my boss about my new interest in Scotch and mentioned I'd just tried Glenfiddich 15 year he told me he had a bottle of the Glenfiddich 18 year he's never gonna' drink so he'd bring it in for me.

The next day he comes in with a bottle of Johnny Waker Red Label. "I thought it was Glenfiddich...must'a drank that last time we had company."

Obviously...I was rather disappointed.

Obviously!!!  Gak - Pine Tar!!  I actually don't really drink but I'll throw a shot back every now and then and, for some reason, can pick really good Whisky and Whiskey.  If you come to PARF I'll fill my flask just for you.....

Sorry.. been a busy few weeks here...

as for blended, my fave is Johnny GOLD.  the blue is nice and all, but i think its overrated. go with gold. its good!  green label is their single malt and its not too bad either.   Also check out The Dimple, Pinch. thats a good blended one to try.

A GOOD, CHEAP single malt scotch, if you can find it around you, is Tomatin.  We have it for like $20 a bottle up our way... and its pretty damned good.

else yeah, Oban, Lagavulin, Bowmore, et al.

PINCH!  *smacks forehead*  THAT'S the one.  Thanks Mage.  My dad isn't much of a drinker for the hard stuff, but he does like a Scotch every now & again.  Pinch is what he likes.

Bought Hawkins a bottle of Caol Ila for the weekend and have a bottle of Isle of Jura Superstition arriving this week.  He seems to be liking the Islay styles - a little sweeter - not as smokey....

Have you tried anything else besides your Johnny Walker?

I'm partial to the single malts, from the isle of Islay. I can't remember how to spell any of them, but I'll post them up anyway
.
There is a good 10 year old single malt called Ardvek(spelling? pronounced Ardbek) that is very affordable and is quite nice. I turned Mage onto it at NYRF 2 seasons ago.  It comes in an avocado green and gold box. It really is quite nice for such a young scotch.

There is another that has a nickname of the "Yellow Submarine", it even has a picture of the yellow sub on it. It's hard to find and it runs about $80 a bottle, but...YUMMMM. I believe that one is a 16 year old. You pronounce it's bottled name as (Brookladdie), but it's not spelled like that. Heh. You can find other vintages of Brookladdie easily, but the Sub is very hard to find.

Another from Islay that I enjoy is called "Boonahabban"(also not spelled like that) Comes in a black and white can, with a Captain standing at the helm as a logo. They have several vintages available as well. I like the 15 year old, but like most good scotches, it's not cheap.

Anything Islay is good.  Port Ellen is awesome, but usually expensive and hard to find since the distillery closed down.  We have a few bottles for special occasions.  Laphroaig would be my next choice for an Islay Whisky.  Bruichladdich is right up there too.

ok...I am a Scotch snob.
