Ok...after polishing off 4 bottles of Speyside scotch (Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Macallan, Balvenie) and one Highland (Singleton) I've now just cracked open my first bottle of Islay (McClelland).

I have to say...I can detect a distinct difference. With my limited vocabulary regarding palate I'd have to describe it as much more woody than the others.

Is that indicative of Islay scotch?

Good enough description - I'd have said peaty.  Yes it will be distinctly different.  You will find as many here have said that you will favor one type or another and stick to variants of that type.

(MM you beat me to peaty!!)

Peaty it is then! I also thought the Singleton was a bit more watery than the others. A Highland trait?

Please do try a Welsh soon though - Penderyn....I think you'll really enjoy it.  Not cheap - about $70 but worth it...

and o hey.. i went and looked...i thought that only scotches were allowed to be called "whisky"   but apparently thats not the case as the Penderyn distillery calls it that too.

check it out:
http://www.welsh-whisky.co.uk/home.html

and hey, ill try it.. as long as its not like those terrible irish whiskeys they try to pass as delicious...  ugh.

I think the "e" is only important if it's claiming to be Scotch and not just whisky in general.

From Wikipedia...

"Scotch whisky labels contain the exact words “Scotch whisky”; “Whisky” is sometimes capitalised. If the word “Scotch” is missing, the whisky is probably made elsewhere. If it says Scotch “whiskey” or “Scottish” whisky, it might well be counterfeit."

Damn it!!  Typed too fast - here you'll enjoy this

The Bard of Banff
Whisky Or Whiskey?

A Scotsman who spells
Whisky with a n ‘e’,
should be hand cuffed
and thrown head first in the Dee.

In the USA and Ireland,
it’s spelt with an ‘e’
but in Scotland
it’s real ‘Whisky’.

So if you see Whisky
and it has an ‘e’,
only take it,
if you get it for free!

For the name is not the same
and it never will be,
a dram is only a real dram,
from a bottle of ‘Scotch Whisky’.

AND...the Wlesh is much better than the Irish.  Was the Welsh that came to the US and gave us Bourbon....

The Daniels family went straight from Wales to Kentucky....since it's one of the kinda bigger names in Bourbon....

Woot! there he is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Daniel

oh.. and to add to the confusion of names...  Jack Daniels is a whiskey, not a bourbon.   go figure!

(correction:  Tennesee Whiskey.. argh!)

Bah scotch.

I recommend Makers Mark.
It's a bourbon whisky.
