Since my heart attack, I've been trying to eat more healthy and am doing fairly well, but every now and again you have to have something sweet and/or chocolate ... Moderation is the word of the day from now on.  I have really have to restrain my saturated fats to less than 3 g per meal (or about 12 g a day), and absolutely are forbidden trans fats, but because I'm also a diabetic I have to watch the carbohydrate content as well as the fats, meaning my total carbs for a meal should not exceed 30 g or about 15-17g for a snack.

Trinity found a recipie some philo pastry shells filled with honeyed walnuts, liberally dosed with cinnamon that were pretty good and came in about 8 g carbs and 1 g sat fat each (They are small but tasty).

Variety is the spice of life I hear. I'm stll looking for other tasty but healthy options ...

Don't eat, just have sex as dessert!

I recommend nuts & peanut butter related treats (the all natural Smuckers variety). Smuckers ingredients: Peanuts, salt...period!  Nuts are high in natural fats but they're good for you.  Flavored, sugar-free drink mixes can stave off the urges and I recommend LOTS & LOTS of water.

I have to agree there - sex is the best dessert and it's exercise.

Oatstraw infusion, hawthorne tincture and burdock root as well, red meat (good quality, preferably game animals or organ meats), and complex carbs....good full or reduced fat dairy prducts including butter - do NOT use those tasteless chemicals they pass off as butter like products. (meat and dairy are where you should spend your money on organic - it doesn't get you much in produce).  Eat some member of the cabbage family at least three times a week.

Avoid enriched anything and most foods that are white (easy way to remember little to no nutritional value)

Are you eating five to six small meals a day?

And sex is always better than just about anything else.....

Mmmmm eat more wench.  Got it  ;)

Yeah, I eat a small meal (<2-3 g sats < 30 g carbs) every 4-6 hours and split the difference with small snacks (<1 g sat fat & < 20 g carbs).  Because of the diabetes, I have to have a small number of carbs every few hours because I produce the slow-acting insulin, just not the burst kind. So sudden carbs flood my system.

I have to agree with everyone as well that sex is the best desert :D However I have found for myself that eating more fruit has really helped me out a lot cause one my biggest problems is not eating right and eating to much junk food. And for the record the phyllo cups with the honeyed walnuts and cinnamon sounds tasty I just might have to try that sometime.

Here is the recipe for the Baklava Tartlets Dragonamont was talking about:

2 cups finely chopped walnuts
3/4 cup honey
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp lemon juice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
3 pkg (1.9 oz each) frozen miniature phyllo tart shells

In a small bowl mix the first six ingredients together.  Spoon 2 teaspoonfuls into each tart shell.  Refrigerate until serving. Yield 45 tartlets

1 tart has:
Calories: 76
Fat: 5 g
    Sat Fat 1
Cholesterol: 5
Sodium: 24
Carbs: 6
Fiber:0
Protein: 2

That is the original recipe.  I use 1 Tablespoon cinnamon because I am a cinnamon freak.  :D

It's not dessert, but it's a good way to support your local agriculture, get lots of fresh tasty fruits and veggies and save some money on your grocery bill.

Go to: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/ and look up community supported agriculture in your area. Each program will vary but I have an awesome one in my area called the "Happy Box". I get a bushel box full of fresh local organic produce (and some non-local organic produce to make sure the box is filled), DELIVERED each week for about $25. I share it with my friend Jane because it's just too much food. I don't get to choose what comes in the box, but the amounts are about the same and it's a nice variety. Try spending 12.50 at the grocery store on non-organic produce and see what you get. Not very much.

CSAs are a great thing!  Unfortunately my two local ones are always sold out of shares... :(  But they also sell at the local Farmer's Market.

Desserts do tend to be hard but a lot of things can be sweetened with sugar free applesauce and simple pies and cobblers made with just the fresj fruit and not a lot of sugar can be good.  for sweetness, honey is your friend - I must have six or seven varitieties right now!

King Arthur flour has a whole cookbook on Whole Grain cooking.  Also look for cookbooks by Healthy Living, Eating Well, and Cooking Light.
