Bragging a wee bit....
« on: Jun 09, 09, 11:37:43 pm CDT »

Just finished this LOTR styled bow for my neighbors 8 year old son, and wanted to show it off.  He'll be using it for target practice and hunting, and he may even be interested in going to the Ren fair next year.

(Yes, I'm pimping out the fair.  the more the merrier, neh?)

Dude, can you make one of those for me?  Just make it plain jane since I just want the bow for my step-grandson; he's eight.  Nice, what is the draw weight?

That is very nice... I kinda want one.

Could you translate it, I'm having trouble matching your hand writing.
And in the spirit of Tolkien... What group is it designed after, and does it have a name?

I could be wrong here... but...

Considering the Elvish script on the bow itself, I'm going to guess it's modeled, oh, I dunno... after the Elven bows, mebbe?

I got that...I was asking if it was intended as a specific Kingdom, Example: Lorien or Mirkwood, I don't believe bows were common in Rivendell. There would be a difference in the bows as I do believe the Elves of Mirkwood are mainly Gray Elves and the Elves that dwell in Lothlorien are White Elves.

For some reason the "close parentheses" never shows as part of the link.

It's weird.

Ocasio, I'd be happy to!  PM me and we'll discuss details, if you like.

The lettering is supposed to be Tengwar Annatar Alt, an "elvish" font on my computer.  If it bears no resemblance to the actual script, I blame my crappy post accident handwriting.  Between the injuries and my pain meds, my hands are a little shaky at times.

It's supposed to read, "Lacho Calad! Drego Morn!" which I'm told is a battle cry of the Dunedain Rangers....your mileage may vary. <shrug>

It's not "modeled" after any particular bow from the LOTR movies, but rather my take on the Rangers themselves, a rather self sufficient crew who would have likely made whatever equipment of their own that they could, based around Striders bow, the one he used in the Mines of Moria. Their equipment would have seen a lot of variation from man to man.

By the look of things (And I'm the first to admit I'm not an expert on LOTR weaponry or LOTR in general), Strider used a short, easy to carry bow, with a relatively stiff draw weight.  It wasn't MEANT to be a serious war bow, but a bow to be used in taking game, and being easy to handle in the brush, with a secondary nod to self defense. That said, a 37 lb. draw WILL put an arrow through a deer, or a lightly armored man.  Or Orc.

Whew!  Tired now.

Ah...

I'm very familiar with the Tengwar, but a little different style than you did, but that's okay. I think that's awesome that you based it off of the rangers, and in my experiences with the Rangers I'd have to agree with you.

Sorry about all the questions, I'm a LotR nerd, and this interested me.

Then you'd appreciate my favorite handmade cherry-wood longbow that is 55# @ 28"!  It shoots very straight and fast.

You guys suck.  I have 3 bows (two recurves and a composite) and no where to shoot where I live.

Isn't that why they make neighbors?

Mobile arrow absorbing targets?

No?

I live on the top floor of an apartment building.  Admittedly I have an unfair advantage on the parking lot but other than that...
