Go West (not so) Young Wench
« on: Aug 17, 09, 06:05:19 am CDT »

So....over the last couple of weeks things have changed a lot.  My rogue (Hawkins whom some of you know) lost his job when his company closed on July 1st so we decided to weigh all of our options including our long term goals.  I send out some CVs and voila!  got a wonderful offer from a company in.......Idaho!!!!!  The panhandle to be precise (Sandpoint - http://www.sandpoint.com).

We've been packing like mad and the moving company arrives tomorrow.  We leave for the four day drive on Sunday the 23rd.  We were able to attend PARF for opening weekend but, alas, that's probably it for this year.  Everyone has made us promise that we will plan our vacations to be able to attend at least one weekend a year.

Why Idaho?  Check out the link - our long term goal is 25 acres with a log cabin - a homestead if you will.  And the mountains of Idaho are probably a better bet than the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Best of luck to the 2 of you.  I'm glad I was able to get to PARF and meet you last year.

I wish you both blessings and good luck in your business and homesteading ventures. Mayhaps, your midwestern travels will allow Trinity & me to meet you sometime at fair.

Very un-green lanternish   :o   What is it that you really want to do and what about do you fear: failure or success?

hawksraven, we wish you the best of luck.

Junuebug and I have been homesteading for many years, and find it a very worthwhile lifestyle.

Are you planning on having livestock?

No, your husband s/o doesn't count as livestock.

Actually my rogue would be the first person to admit he counts as livestock!!

As we have a house here to sell we will be renting for a year or so. At first our only livestock would be the St. Bernard (who the daddy gets to cart 2600 miles - she gets car sick!) and the ferrets who will travel with the mommy.

My goal is chickens, muscovies, and maybe a goose or two (ironically we finished the chicken coop the week he lost his job so we've not put anything in it yet), some milk goats, and eating bunnies (bring me my hossenpfeffer!!!!).  I want my property to have a moose pond and a trout stream as well.  Mike has promised to teach me how to trap and there are elk and other goodies to snipe out there for eating.  Mike's goal is to be as far off the grid as possible.  We want 25-30 acres and a log cabin.

Of course all of my gardening know how is being flung out the window - I'm going from sandy USDA zone 7b to glaciel dirt 6B.  I don't think my maters are gonna like that too much....

This sounds great. Idaho is the place for homesteading. The gem stone state or something like that.
Best of luck to both of you!

heh. You and my Junebug would get on just fine.

She's also a fan of Muscovies, bunnies for meat, and doats.

I'll see if I can find the pictures of the hutches, coops and waterers she made herself.

I'm depressed that I won't be meeting you in Maryland, but I'm happy that you're going off to make your happy future. Good luck, and you need to come and see me in Texas sometime- don't make me come up there and club you with a potato...
