For Ron ...it's a star wars thang
« on: Nov 03, 10, 02:17:39 pm CDT »

Ron? what do you think of my converting this costume into a Dark Jedi Variant so far?  I wanted your opinion but felt like opening up the floor for constructive criticism to other SW fans out here.  I am going to sign up for the 501st Alabama Garrison and build a Trooper armor set soon but for now I'm going with what I have...lightsaber in hand.

I plan to add arm/shoulder armor and possibly some leather tabards.  I will have to resin cast a Sith mask or helmet.

*humps Ocasio's leg*

And before anyone asks... Hell no I ain't housebroken.

Looks good so far hon.  My only critique is the robe/cloak/whatever it is:  With the satin binding and the non-shiny fabric, it looks like a baby blanket.  My advice would be to take the binding off and re-hem it without the satin binding.  Plus... the satin kinda competes with the leather.

*sniffs the leather... humps his leg again*

Takes up the other leg that Sarah isn't busy on...

Agree with the cloak comment.  But, is there anyway for a full view...what kind of shirt type thang is going on?

Looks excellent so far.

Some thoughts:

Unless the cloak is at least a 3/4 round I'd ditch it.  Sith need both combat manuverability as well as their own personal shroud of darkness to be mysterious and evil in.  Also a slight bit of weighting around the bottom hem will help both with making it sit right as well as making it more useful in combat.

I'd consider a full leather pauldron/gorget to both beef out your shoulders and also to beef up the armor look a bit.

For both leather tabarding and layering I'd look at Vader, Maul and both incarnations of the Assassin's suit from Assassin's Creed I and II for further ideas.

You've got an awesome start so far.  Keep going!

Nice saber too, Parks?

Now that I think about it I'd also consider adding a second row of straps and buckles to the gauntlets just to keep the theme started with the sandlars and jerkin.

Naw, I just know what costuming works and where to find the right influences...and the weird part is that I'm straight and I can still do this.  I'm talented and shit.

I was just kidding.
I'm the same way! I just tend to spend way too much time in R&D, planning, and thinking and end up doing nothing a lot of the time.
I have always put great detail in all my halloween costumes. I make everything myself. I'm not as knowledgable with garb, but I'm learning. I'm planning a tabard with a specific cut that I can't find anywhere. BTW I'm straight too! I'm guessing several referenses to my wife may have tipped you off. We're not alone.

As far as Ocasio's dark jedi goes, I would lose the blue grey lining around the waist. I like black and darkness and evil shit. I would also avoid showing any skin unless I can make it look evil and shit. Like pale white and veiny or scarred. I would make latex sleeves to slip over my arms. Paint could get messy. Another idea is to use underarmor with as close to the base skin tone that I would want. In this case white. Then smear it with liquid latex to give it texture. You can color liquid latex with acrylic paints. A heat gun on the latex will get you a nice scarred effect when it start bubbling up.

If he makes everything black then much of the detail of the layers will get lost.  A few items not black will keep the complexity of the look.

Thanks for the compliments and the creative critiques...exactly what I needed.  Humping is always encouraged!  /humpsback

Ron, you are SO on track, I ordered a set of buckle straps (4) from Arik (SoS) already... I pick them up in Carolina in 2 weeks!

The cloak is hand made and is a half circle light fleece with a satin edge.  The bottom naturally sinks so i didn't have to add any weights.  It's a popular item when i wear it at fairs.  But I plan to make another style soon at a workshop with my 501st brothers www.starwarsalabama.com; they're making Maul and Revan costumes!

Raven, the 'shirt' is like an all leather tunic with long 'tails' but all the way around.  It closes in the front with the clasps.  that's the only way i can describe it.  I have more pics but I don't like the way I look in them (shy cuz I haven't work out in months)  :-[

Here is another pic full view with a funny expression on my face.  I hate flash amateur photography...even in porn.

I plan to get some raw black silk to make and 'underbelt' (goes under the leather ones) and tabard that is one semi-wide piece in the back and comes down over the shoulders into two parts along each hip like Vader's.

What have you got in mind for arm/shoulder armor?

Maybe something similar to what I'm wearing in these shots but in black with gray, dark blue or purple trim:

I'd say talk to Dmitri about it but I think he's in temporary retirement again.

I meant black for all the fabrics. As far as the leather goes, a distressed look would suit a warrior nicely. Between that, the buckles, and the fabric, there would be plenty of layers to focus on. To me, too clean means not enough action.

Something like this maybe?

http://cgi.ebay.com/CUSTOM-CRAFTD-LEATHER-MANTLE-SHOULDERS-SCA-LARP-armor-/300331906434?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45ed2d3582

Nice.  I like the idea of 'adding to the shoulders.  You can't see it in the photos but i'm waering a heavy/thick leather gorget.

And I forgot to mention that the sabre is indeed Parks...you win again.  I have a Master Replicas DV sabre too.  Remember our conversations about sabres?  I'm saving up.

Jon, the lining in the surcoat is the reason i hate flash photography but it can be darkened with mink oil/black shoe polish.  i just buoght it so I haven't gotten to that yet.  i also agree that I need good arm armor to 'cover up'.  i hate paint or make-up.  My costume designs are based on simplicity of use: I like to get in/out of them quick and I like that I can move/run/jump/mock battle in them without losing anything.  I tend to be very articulated and animated in costume.   :P

Do you think a Revan mask would work?

Reven would loook cool. Nice and blank. Plus you can make faces at people beneath it. Something like Darth Nihilus would add some nice contrast too!

What? What'd I say?

LOL, could just be me but u were over-defensive earlier...no need for joo to 'splain'.

So should I go with hand crafted leather armor or resin cast Star Wars style armor? Black or Grey of course.  I think a black/gray Vader mantle would be pretty boss along with arm pieces.
