While I can, and often do appreciate mead and nothing makes me happier than a nice Guinness, sometimes I just need the hard liquor.  Vodka and Rum are my favorites.  don't give me tequlla, though, that shite messes me up, bad!   ::drunk::

You can't beat the "Holy Trinity": A shot of delicious Irish Whiskey (Jameson, Red-Breast, Middletons-- none of that Bushmills shit, ) chased with a glass of true Shannon Bunratty Mead, followed by a pint of good stout (Guiness is primo, but I do have the occassional craving for Murphy's.)

I'm SO with Reaver on that one. Bunratty's is nasty mead made with white wine and honey ? FEH    ! I'd rather drink Chaucers! ( I hate Chaucers only slightly less !)

Lurgenshal makes an ok mead.. DON'T buy the Christmas version though, that is not so good.

Mondiack is the BEST mead you can get your hands on. BUT you can only get it certain places because of import laws from Scotland to here.

Can't say I've had Bunratty on this side of the pond, but it's tasty enough in County Clare-- perhaps some sort of export additives or procedures mar the taste for the Yanks. It certainly applies to Guinness...anyone who's had a fresh pint in the Emerald Isle knows the exported stuff can't hold a candle, no matter how well poured...

Still don't think Bushmills qualifies as an Irish Whiskey...It's more like a UK whiskey....

After three or four Holy Trinities who really cares?

Any Guinness at SW?

I think it started with an M. I can't think of the name, but an Irish pub owner in Germany gave me a shot of this stuff that came in a fancy wooden box and it was the smoothest whiskey I ever had.

Mage,

The jackasses actually DO have a real mead: same bottle with "EXPORT" stamped on it.  It is equally swilllike-but in it's own dreadful, miserable way.

Treon,
I believe you're referring to Middleton Irish Whiskey (which was mentioned above). It's made by Jameson.

That stuff kicks the proverbial mule!

Oooh...Hrrmmm,

For the sweet tooth, Mead.

Day in, day out, Guiness would take the prize, if there was a pub nearby that poured a decent pint.

Since THAT's not happenin any time soon...Scotch. Single Malt.
Glenmorangie 18 year.

My home away from barracks was Kelly's Irish Pub in Bad Kreuznack. The owner and all the barmaids were good friends of mine the whole time I was there. There's nothing like drinking with the Irish. Theyt never want to leave early. ::guinness::

Right you are Treon!

We do, however, 'close' the pub early so we don't have to mind the constable whilst we imbibe, inebriate, intoxicate, and exaggerate.
By the way wasn't there a Burger King 'round them barracks? A Yank friend of mine used to work at one....He now owns a pub in Chicago named The Prodigal Son. I painted the bar murals and designed the logo.

Leela's a good point as well.

A decent Guinness at Faire is like a saws-all in a grocery store: no one knows how it got on the shelves, but hot damn don't you just NEED it! My only question is-- who's bringing all this delicious whiskey? and where can I fence me some?

Aye, there was a BK in BK. I still can't eat Burger King because of it.
You're right about the Guinness not being the same here, though. I don't know how it is on th Emerald Isle, but I know it was better in Germany than it is here. Over there they have laws against tainting beer with preservatives. Here they require it.
The only time I was in Berlin was for the Love Parade. I didn't make it out of the downtown area.

I was actually out with a friend trying a new pub once and my friend ordered a Guiness.  The bartender started trying to spoon the head out of the glass!  :x  My friend got outraged, I fell off my stool, and we procedded to give the bartender an education before leaving and vowing never to return!  I mean, damn!!!!

Actually, I only drink ales and stouts. Regular pilsner makes me sick after just one. A guy who used to work for AB suggested that it might just be the preservatives they use here that I'm alergic to, but I just can't stomach the style enough to try a foriegn one.
BTW I never liked whiskey except for that Middleton's. But $110 a bottle? Any other whiskeys that are maybe half as good that you could recomend?

Bourbon??? If you're a masochist you'll drink it to suit your fetish.

I'll start off a Yank...

Next time you're in a decent watering hole, ask for a Jameson up.

Now, as an ancient bar-man, I can tell you, what the bottle says does not mean what the bottle contains. If you have the green available to tip the bartender, ask for a fresh bottle. If you don't you may get what's called "rail" or "swill"... Have the said bar-person pour the said liquid from the fresh bottle into a snifter, swill it around  pretending to look for viscosity, check the nose, then take a generous sip... Don't 'shoot' it like a Yank student....Wait, we are in America: take a generous sip, say "smooth", then chug the rest like a Yank student.

Rinse and Repeat.

1. My favorite drink is Mead, hands down. There's a reason why i'm the mead goddess. nuff said.
2. When not at faire, i drink Bunratty sometimes (yes i'll admit it) only cause the mead found in NYC is actually WORSE.  Chaucers i drink like water cause its what's served in NYRF and I'm used to it so it ends up being fine. I don't like the mead in MDRF.
3. There's a place in downtown Manhattan that serves about 40? 50? 60? i forget the number they brag but that many different beers on tap.  ALL in Styrofoam cups. including the Guinness

Yup, yup.

A Reverend Horton Heat CD release party was in some Dallas Bar I happened to attend a year or so ago. It was "glasses at the bar, styro if you're traveling"  I happened to be escorting a registrar from the Dallas Museum of Art at the time, and she came fully loaded with flask of whiskey and all... an accidental wench. I still love her for it. Ellen is that you?

36 taps? That's 6 towers an' a fock load of lines. 4X4 is even big...

check out the Prodigal Son in Chicago...

not to scoff or belittle, but most bars in NYC worth their salt, can boast the bottles... and the patrons are usualy enticed to finish one of each to gain a reward...

However, according to the new enforcers, we can't smoke in NYC not even Captain Black from a pipe... so sticking to a bar of late has been sticky...

If not  for the Rennies here, I'd be heading back home...

You can't beat the "Holy Trinity": A shot of delicious Irish Whiskey (Jameson, Red-Breast, Middletons-- none of that Bushmills shit, ) chased with a glass of Bunratty Mead, followed by a pint of good stout (Guiness is primo, but I do have the occassional craving for Murphy's.)
I'll drink to that.::guinness::  ::guinness::

Will ye be drinking to that at Stockwood? I'll bring the whiskey....

GUINNESS GUINNESS GUINNESS..... or as I usually refer to it, a meal in a pint glass...  ::guinness::

HOWEVER... If you have a sweet tooth, and can deal with something NOT from the Emerald Isle, or that immediate vicinity... try something from the European Mainland.... BaarenJaeger...  or as I like to call it Ubermeade... ::brix::

Yes, the Barenfang is some good stuff. I used to get it all the time in GE where the bee keepers would make everything they could out of their honey. Fresh, homemade mead and barenfang all the time. Now I just have to settle for the namebrand exports
Oh, well, it's still drink ::guzzle::

During faire-season, mead would be my 1st choice (when it's good) or BaarenJaeger!!! (sp?)
In the off-season:
Love Guinness ("the beer that eats like a meal") There's also a micro-pub my rogue and I frequent that serves great stoudts and IPA's.
Everclear (when bound for the Jersey Shore, as we can't get it here in PA)

Poor Fiona - I feel your pain on the Everclear, but luckly I live just across the line from MD where they do sell it.

Favorites:

Handgranades (Personal Creation)
Soak stemmed cherries in a custom mix of grain and rum for at least 3 days, drain / dry and then dip in chocolate

CIDER CIDER CIDER CIDER
Mead
Rum
I just got exposed to Sangsters Creamed Rum - OMG is it to die for, It has got to be the Rum version of Crack. Only problem is it is $$$ to get in the US, you have to order it from Jamica

Actually yes it does.  Mead is always best. Cider too. But a good microbrew will do the trick. But back to Cider. I am currently brewing my own cider for the Silverleaf Ren Faire.  Its really good stuff. I want to add some Cranberries or something to give it a bit more of a taste..any sugesstions? :?:

As I could only cast a vote for ONE, I had to pick the Guinness, but Mead is a close if not equal second....
